Rolling Stone Names Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” As The Greatest Country Song Of All Time

Rolling Stone Magazine Has Recognized Dolly Parton’s Classic “Jolene” As The Greatest Country Song Of All Time.

This significant recognition comes over 50 years after the song’s initial release, reaffirming its enduring impact and relevance in the world of music.

In 2014, Rolling Stone ventured into country music with the inception of Rolling Stone Country, marking the occasion with a compilation of the 100 Greatest Country Songs, highlighting iconic artists and their timeless contributions to the industry.

To commemorate the site’s 10th anniversary, they expanded the list to include 200 exceptional songs, paying homage to the genre’s rich musical heritage.

On Friday, May 24, The Publication Unveiled Its “200 Greatest Country Songs Of All Time” List, With Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” Taking The Number One Spot.

“While the world was falling in love with her self-described ‘Backwoods Barbie’ image, she was fighting to make her way as a woman in Nashville, writing tough-minded tales like ‘Coat of Many Colors’ and ‘Down From Dover.’ In ‘Jolene,’ she begs another woman not to steal her man, hitting high-lonesome notes straight from the Great Smoky Mountains. It was a Number One country hit in 1973, yet it feels both ancient and uncannily modern. ‘Jolene’ has inspired great interpretations by artists from Miley Cyrus to the White Stripes to Beyoncé. But it’s the song that sums up Dolly Parton at her realest and greatest.”

Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” shined on the list alongside songs by legendary artists like Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline, showcasing its enduring musical brilliance. Released in 1973, the song possesses a timeless allure that remains both captivating and contemporary. Its emotive depth and compelling vocals have sparked interpretations by esteemed artists, including Little Big Town, Kelly Clarkson, and, more recently, Beyoncé.

According to Rolling Stone, “Jolene” represents Dolly Parton’s peak as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller, making it “the ultimate country heartbreak song.”

Dolly Parton’s authentic and bold storytelling has resonated with audiences across generations for years. She once expressed to Rolling Stone in 1975, “I was telling my own stories, speaking my own feelings. I’m a pretty bold person.”

Did you know that a baby named Jolene was once left on Dolly’s doorstep?
