Kelly Clarkson’s future on The Voice briefly came into question following the tragic passing of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, on August 7. Blackstock, the father of her two children, passed away just weeks before Clarkson postponed her Las Vegas residency dates in August. She explained that she needed to be “fully present” for her kids during this difficult time.
Kelly Clarkson’s History On The Voice
Fans have loved watching Kelly Clarkson as a coach on The Voice. She first joined the competition in Season 14 and remained through Season 21. After a short break, she returned for Season 23, before stepping away once again to focus on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Earlier this year, NBC announced Clarkson’s official comeback as a coach for The Voice Season 29, titled Battle of Champions, which is set to debut in early 2026. Filming for the season began in the summer of 2025.

Rumors About Kelly Clarkson Leaving The Show
After Brandon Blackstock’s death, speculation quickly spread that Clarkson might withdraw from Season 29 altogether. Reports suggested that producers were already looking for a replacement.
However, a new update has confirmed otherwise. Deadline reported that Kelly Clarkson only missed one rehearsal day for the Battle Rounds. On that day, Jennifer Hudson—another American Idol alum and talk show host—temporarily filled in.
Reba McEntire And Kelly Clarkson Supported By The Show
Filming for The Voice Season 29 is taking place alongside Season 28, which will premiere in fall 2025. Coaches for Season 28 include Michael Bublé, Niall Horan, Snoop Dogg, and Reba McEntire.
Brandon Blackstock’s death also affected McEntire, who was married to his father, Narvel Blackstock, for 26 years. Reports suggested she may have missed one taping as well.
Despite the challenges, both Clarkson and McEntire returned to set and are fulfilling their coaching duties.

Carson Daly, longtime host of The Voice, spoke to Us Weekly about how the cast and crew are standing by Clarkson and McEntire during this difficult time.
“It’s been tough. We all knew Brandon well, and we are a family,” Daly said. “We’ve just been sending prayers and support to them. It’s a terrible situation.”
He added that the support goes beyond the workplace:
“It’s really no different than what you would do for your family. You let them know you’re there, you’re praying for them, and you’re giving them space at the same time.”
