Elmo Sings With His Friend, Chris Stapleton, On ‘Sesame Street’
Chris Stapleton Sings Of Music And Its Power With Muppets
“Can you tell me how to get… how to get to Sesame Street?”
He may be “just a traveller on this earth,” but country artist Chris Stapleton has found his way to Sesame Street.
Sitting on the steps of 123 Sesame Street, Chris was joined by his colorful Muppet friends, Elmo and Abby Cadabby.
With a guitar in hand, Chris did more than just sing a pleasant song for his furry friends and children watching at home, but he wrote the song, too.
“Chris Stapleton really wanted to write his own song,” said Sesame Street’s music director, Bill Sherman, in an interview with the Associated Press, noting that he and Chris worked on the song over Zoom. “It was really one of the most surreal two-hour Zooms that I really ever had in my life.”

Introduced by Elmo, the red three-and-a-half-year-old Muppet said, “Oh, hi there, we’re here with our friend, Mr. Chris Stapleton.”
Abby Cadabby then said, “He’s teaching us all about music and friends.”
Responding, Chris nodded, saying, “That’s right, Abby.”
He then begins strumming his guitar, singing a song titled “You Got A Friend In Music.”
Stapleton, who is known for his songwriting prowess and engaging presence, wrote a song about both writing music and experiencing music, featuring lyrics like the following:
“Music is the sound of your friends gathered ‘round, and the smiles and the frowns on their faces.”
Elmo and Abby then join in, singing:
“Music helps you feel feelings true and real, and they’re felt by people in different places.”
Soon after, Bert and Ernie join in, taking their own verse, and they’re later joined by the musical stylings of Grover and Cookie Monster as everyone sings in unison.
Watch Chris Stapleton sing “You Got A Friend In Music” with the residents of Sesame Street, here:
“That was beautiful, Mr. Chris,” Elmo said as the song ended, with all the other Muppets voicing their agreement.
Chris then replied, “Thank you, Elmo.”
