Televangelist Jim Bakker passes away at 86, wife confirms.

Jim Bakker, the influential televangelist known for his early work alongside his late wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, has passed away at the age of 86.

His spouse, Lori Beth Graham Bakker, confirmed the news on social media, stating he “went home to be with the Lord” without disclosing a cause of death.

Rising to prominence through his show The PTL Club, Bakker’s career took a tumultuous turn when a federal fraud case led to his imprisonment, tarnishing his legacy in American Christian television.

Tributes from Family

In her heartfelt announcement, Lori expressed her sorrow, saying, “It is with a broken heart that I share that my beloved husband, Jim Bakker, went home to be with the Lord this evening.” She revered him not only as her husband but as her best friend, highlighting his six decades dedicated to preaching the Gospel.

“Jim loved people deeply. He loved this ministry, and he loved the friends and partners who stood with him throughout the years,” she continued. Lori called for prayers and privacy for their family, concluding, “Jim finished his race with faith. His voice, his vision, and his legacy will never be forgotten.”

From Humble Beginnings to Televangelism Icon

Bakker’s journey began when he met Tammy Faye at a Minnesota Bible college, leading to their marriage in 1961. Together, they launched their ministry in South Carolina and became part of Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network, where they created a children’s puppet show in 1964.

In 1974, they established The PTL Club, which evolved from a television program into an expansive religious broadcasting and theme park venture, making them household names in the televangelism sphere.

Despite their success, Bakker’s ministry was scrutinized by federal authorities, culminating in his 1988 indictment on multiple counts of fraud. Found guilty in 1989, he received a 45-year sentence but was released after serving five years.

After his release, Bakker remarried Lori Beth Graham in 1998, and they later adopted five children. He eventually returned to televangelism, hosting The Jim Bakker Show, which frequently focused on Christian prophecy.

As fans and colleagues reflect on Bakker’s legacy, his complex journey through faith and public life continues to resonate in the realm of American televangelism.
