Las Cruces Shooting: 3 Dead, 15 Injured in New Mexico Tragedy

A devastating shooting in Las Cruces, New Mexico, has left three people dead and 15 others injured, according to an official statement from the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD). Authorities confirmed that two of the deceased were 19 years old, while the third was just 16. The ages of those injured range from 16 to 36 years old.

Unsanctioned Car Show Turns Deadly

Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story revealed that the incident took place near Young Park, where an unsanctioned car show had been occurring—a recurring issue for the community. According to Story, the crime scene is expansive, with multiple ongoing investigations.

“The investigation so far reveals that there was an altercation between two groups of people, and that altercation escalated to gunfire between both groups,” Chief Story stated. He reassured the public that law enforcement is actively working to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.

Details on the Victims

Fire Chief Michael Daniels provided additional details, stating that a total of 18 victims were involved, including the three fatalities. Four victims have been treated and released, while seven were transported to El Paso for further medical care. The conditions of the remaining four victims remain unknown at this time.

A local NBC affiliate, KTSM, reported that a grieving family believes one of their relatives may have been among the deceased, though this information has yet to be confirmed by authorities.

Las Cruces Officials Respond

During the press conference, Chief Story criticized New Mexico’s policies, stating, “This horrendous, senseless act is a reminder of the blatant disregard people in New Mexico have for the rule of law and order. It also highlights the utter lack of fear of accountability in our state.”

Mayor Eric Enriquez addressed the community, urging unity in the wake of the tragedy. “We need to stand strong. We need to come together. Please help us heal and join me in my thoughts and prayers for the families and those lives that have been lost,” Enriquez said.

Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo also weighed in on the tragedy via Instagram, calling it “a heinous act of violence that will leave our city mourning.” She urged residents to support the affected families and avoid spreading misinformation.
