“Voice” Star Ruby Leigh Covers Coach Reba’s “You Lie”

Voice Standout Ruby Leigh Performs “You Lie,” Her Coach Reba McEntire’s #1 Hit From 1990
Season 24 of The Voice aired its first round of live shows on Monday (December 4). Fans were especially looking forward to seeing Team Reba‘s Ruby Leigh perform again.

The 16-year-old country artist has amazed viewers since her four-chair turn blind audition. She performed a yodel-infused version of Patsy Montana‘s “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart.”
Since then, Ruby has covered other classic and traditional country tunes such as LeAnn Rimes‘ “Blue” and Dolly Parton‘s “Jolene.”

Ruby advanced to the live shows after delivering a breathtaking rendition of Linda Ronstadt‘s “Long, Long Time” during the playoffs.

Reba Beams With Pride While Watching Ruby Sing On The Voice
During the first live show, Ruby decided to cover one of her coach’s songs. She selected Reba’s #1 hit from 1990, “You Lie.”
“You Lie” was originally recorded by another country artist, Cee Cee Chapman. She released her version in 1988.

Reba released her cover two years later, and it took off like wildfire. The song claimed the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart, and spent a total of 20 weeks on the chart overall.

“You Lie” led Reba to a Grammy nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1991. She lost to Kathy Mattea, who won for “Where’ve You Been.”

Needless to say, Ruby knew she had a lot to live up to when she hit the Voice stage to sing “You Lie.” But she rose to the occasion, and delivered a performance that left Reba beaming with pride from her red chair.
After Ruby finished singing, a teary-eyed Reba remarked:

“You blew it out of the water. That was spectacular. The way you can hold a note is so powerful.”
