Trump says they made “some great progress” but “there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” takes no questions
A “Profound” Discussion with Multiple Agreements
After Putin finished his remarks, President Trump described the meeting as “very profound.” He said they reached agreement on many points and made progress on others.
“We agreed on most points,” President Trump stated. “A couple of big ones remain unresolved, but we have made headway. There’s no deal until we have a deal. I will call NATO shortly, as well as the people I consider appropriate. I will also speak with President Zelenskyy to share the details of today’s meeting.”
He did not take questions from the press but emphasized the day’s progress: “We really made some great steps forward today.”
Putin Sees Agreements as a Starting Point for Ukraine Solution
Putin suggested that the two sides reached certain agreements, though he avoided revealing details. He noted that U.S.-Russia relations have “fallen to the lowest point since the Cold War” but said President Trump wants to address the “crux” of the Ukraine conflict.
Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, claimed the situation involves fundamental threats to Russia’s security. He stressed that any lasting settlement must address the “primary roots” of the conflict.
The Russian leader also expressed interest in normalizing broader relations with the United States:
“I expect today’s agreements will mark the starting point for resolving the Ukrainian issue and restoring business-like, pragmatic ties between Russia and the U.S.,” he said.
A Constructive Press Conference
With a “Pursuing Peace” backdrop, President Trump and Putin stood at their lecterns. Trump invited Putin to speak first. Through a translator, Putin described the negotiations as “thorough” and “useful,” adding that they took place in an atmosphere of “mutual respect.”
Nearly Three Hours of Talks
The summit’s first session lasted almost three hours, beginning at 11:30 a.m. local time and ending around 2:15 p.m., according to the Kremlin. The talks involved both leaders and two top aides from each side.
An expanded lunch session with more officials was planned but did not occur before the press conference. It remains unclear whether the lunch was canceled or postponed until after the leaders addressed the media.
Putin invites Trump to Moscow for next conversation
As the U.S. president concluded his brief remarks, he told Putin, “We’ll speak to you very soon.”
In English, Putin responded: “Next time in Moscow.”
“Oh, that’s an interesting one,” Mr. Trump said. “I don’t know. I’ll get a little heat on that one. But I can see it possibly happening.”
Both Mr. Trump and Putin thanked reporters before exiting the stage, refusing shouted questions from reporters.
