A Shocking Late-Night Attack
At 11:58 PM, Michael Hatcher called 911 to report a home invasion. When deputies arrived at the family home, they found Michael outside, injured but alive.
The suspect, identified as Kevin Moses Walker, 41, was found dead in the driveway. Investigators say Michael managed to retrieve a handgun from his vehicle and fire one shot in self-defense, stopping the attacker.
Inside, deputies discovered Holly with fatal stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson described the case as unlike anything he has seen in his 31 years in law enforcement, noting that the attack appeared random with no known motive.

The Suspect’s Activities Before the Crime
Authorities pieced together Walker’s movements in the days leading up to the crime. On August 1, Walker rented a campsite at Endless Caverns in New Market, Virginia. He toured the caverns and later went to Walmart, where he purchased a sleeping bag and a large knife.
The following day, police found his abandoned vehicle and discovered a break-in at the Endless Caverns store. Although nothing was stolen, felony warrants were issued for Walker’s arrest.
Less than 24 hours later, the situation escalated into the fatal break-in at the Hatcher home.
No Charges, but an Ongoing Investigation
Since Walker died at the scene, no criminal charges will be filed. However, the investigation remains open as authorities work to fully understand what led to the violent incident.
