Morgan Wallen Shares “Little Hints” Of Christian Faith In His Music

Pastor’s Kid Morgan Wallen Speaks On His Christian Faith

“I’d shame me, I’d blame me, I’d make me pay for my mistakes, but I don’t think Jesus does it that way,” sang country artist Morgan Wallen in his 2022 single “Don’t Think Jesus.”

Later, he goes on to sing, “Lord knows I ain’t perfect.”

While he didn’t write the lyrics to “Don’t Think Jesus,” this is just one example of Wallen’s engagement with his Christian faith through his music.

Now, on his highly anticipated fourth studio album, I’m the Problem, listeners are beginning to hear new material that continues illustrating Wallen’s relationship with his faith. The artist is also speaking directly on the “little hints” of Christian messaging in his music.

“I Ain’t Comin’ Back”

Released on April 18, “I Ain’t Comin’ Back” is the latest single from Wallen’s forthcoming 37-track, triple-LP I’m the Problem.

Reuniting him with his fellow “I Had Some Help” singer, Post Malone, the new song was initially intended for Malone’s 2024 album F-1 Trillion.

“I Ain’t Comin’ Back” tells the story of a man who describes himself as “a redneck,” “a lost cause,” and “a gambler.” Expounding on this, Wallen kicks off his chorus by saying, “Girl, half of this town has got a name for me, and I can’t say I don’t agree.”

As he closes out the chorus, it becomes clear the implication is that the town isn’t calling him “Jesus,” as indicated by the following lyric:

“There’s a lotta reasons I ain’t Jesus, but the main one is that I’m not comin’ back.”

Listen to the song, and read the lyrics, here:

Lyrically, Wallen tends to approach the subject of faith with an eye on the contradictions in one’s life — moral dilemmas and all. Known for singing stories of struggle, and letting the “liquor talk,” it’s his self-awareness that reveals his inner conflict.

Further, as the son of a Southern Baptist minister, based out of Sneedville, Tennessee, Biblical allusions seem to come naturally for Wallen.

“Now, I’m walkin’ on this water mixed with Johnnie Walker Black,” he says, calling to mind Peter sinking into the water more than Jesus walking over its surface.

Wallen’s Faith

Ahead of the release of “I Ain’t Comin’ Back,” Wallen spoke on what drew him to the song, saying:

I love what [this song] says. There’s a lot of cool imagery, and, you know, me, as a Christian, I think any time that I can throw little hints of that in my music, I’m always all for it.”

Of these hints of his faith, he added, “Tryin’ not to be takin’ it too lightly, but also, you know, making it cool.”
