Kenny Chesney narrowly avoided a tragic fate on September 11, 2001, when he was scheduled to film a music video just a block from the World Trade Center in New York City.
On that fateful day, nearly 3,000 lives were lost in a series of coordinated terrorist attacks across the country, including the destruction of the Twin Towers and a strike on the Pentagon. Chesney, who had intended to shoot a video for his re-released single “The Tin Man,” was spared due to unexpected equipment delays that postponed the shoot.
Plans in New York City Disrupted
Chesney’s plans were set in motion shortly after the re-release of “The Tin Man,” a song he had originally launched in 1994. He recalls being in Pennsylvania for a performance the day before the attacks, intending to make the trip to New York City overnight. “We played a fair in Pennsylvania on Sept. 10, and we were supposed to have driven from Pennsylvania into New York City that night,” he told CMT, citing an immediate connection to the events unfolding that morning.
However, as he traveled through Virginia on September 11, he turned on CNN and was met with harrowing images of the attacks. Initially shocked, he later grasped the gravity of the situation as the realization set in: “Oh, my God. I said, ‘We’re supposed to be there.’ And it was a weird feeling,” he reflected.
A Moment of Reflection
In the wake of the attacks, Chesney expressed a profound sense of gratitude for being spared. “I’ve always believed in guardian angels, but it really makes you believe that there’s something up there,” he stated, acknowledging the feelings of loss for those who were affected. “I’m glad we weren’t there. I mean, I feel for everybody that was there. I think we’ve all been changed forever by it.”
