Kenny Chesney is heartbroken following the passing of Poncho, his beloved goldendoodle, who died early this morning at the age of 15.
The country music star shared the emotional news via social media, revealing that Poncho, affectionately known as Da Ponch, peacefully departed at 5:15 AM. In his heartfelt tribute, Chesney expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “my heart is broken but yet so full ’cause I know he gave us all he had.” Reflecting on their 15 years together, he recalled the countless adventures they shared, from road trips to watching sunsets.
Kenny Chesney’s Tribute to Poncho
In a lengthy post, Chesney honored Poncho’s memory with a collection of photos showcasing their time together—surfing, boating, and even a cherished moment when Poncho joined him on stage at a Chicago stadium show in 2024. The singer reminisced about how Poncho came into his life as a puppy, when a friend encouraged him to “learn to attach to something.” He noted, “I’ve heard a dog enters your life when you need it most,” reflecting on the profound bond they formed.
Chesney described Poncho as a “constant companion” who was not only curious but also possessed a unique intelligence. He shared how Poncho enriched his life, alongside his partner Mary Nolan and another family member, a rescue pit bull named Ruby. “Poncho brought so much joy, energy, light and fun into mine and Mary’s life,” he conveyed.
Life with Mary Nolan
Mary Nolan, who has been romantically linked to Chesney for many years, has generally maintained a low profile. In his 2025 memoir Heart Life Music, he discussed their journey of raising dogs together. Upon adopting Poncho, he referred to Nolan as “the woman I’d been seeing.” Their family grew with the addition of Ruby, a traumatized rescue, which Chesney described as requiring the abundance of love Nolan was able to provide. “Mary had the perfect heart for the task,” he said.
Although Chesney hinted at a romantic breakup with Nolan at some point, he noted that they continued to co-parent their dogs, especially during Ruby’s battle with illness prior to her passing in December 2022. In a recent appearance on Anderson Cooper’s podcast, Chesney shared that he had not yet considered adopting another pet, acknowledging Nolan’s ongoing grief over Ruby’s death.
As fans and followers mourn Poncho’s loss alongside Chesney, the legacy of unconditional love reflected in their bond will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of many.
