Country Stars Gather To Honor Hall Of Fame Songwriter Dean Dillon
On Wednesday (October 9), some of country music’s biggest stars gathered to honor the legendary songwriter Dean Dillon, including his longtime collaborator and friend, George Strait.
The Songs and Stories of Dean Dillon tribute concert featured performances from Vince Gill, Cody Johnson, Riley Green, Jamey Johnson, Pam Tillis, and Strait, among others. The show was filmed for a “national broadcast” that will premiere on a yet-to-be-announced date.

“Tennessee Whiskey” by David Allan Coe, then George Jones, and later, Chris Stapleton
“Nobody in His Right Mind Would’ve Left Her” by George Strait
“Ocean Front Property” by George Strait
“The Chair” by George Strait
“She Let Herself Go” by George Strait

“A Little Too Late” by Toby Keith
“Leave Them Boys Alone” by Hank Williams, Jr., Waylon Jennings, and Ernest Tubb
For writing these songs and many others, Dillon was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002. He was then inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame 18 years later, in 2020.
Dean Dillon And George Strait Are Longtime Friends And Collaborators
George Strait has recorded many of Dillon’s most iconic songs. Their friendship started after Strait recorded the Dillon and Frank Dycus-penned “Unwound” as his first single. The song debuted in 1981 and reached #6 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Since then, Dillon has written over 60 songs for and with Strait. Dillon also co-wrote two tracks that appear on Strait’s latest album, Cowboys and Dreamers. He co-wrote the faith-based track “The Book” and the tropical-themed “MIA Down in MIA.”
Because Dillon has been such a huge part of his life, Strait dropped everything to honor him at the Songs and Stories of Dean Dillon concert. Strait chose to pay tribute by singing “Here for a Good Time.”
Dillon and Strait co-wrote “Here for a Good Time” with Strait’s son, Bubba. It debuted in 2011 as the first single from Strait’s album of the same name.
The track reached the #2 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart and crossed over to claim the 46th position on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. It has since been certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Strait poured his signature energy and charm into his live performance of “Here for a Good Time” at the Dean Dillon tribute show. The audience cheered and sang along while watching Strait sing the unforgettable hit.
