The Eagles’ highly anticipated reunion tour took a somber turn in October 1994 when the band was forced to cancel its remaining dates due to Glenn Frey’s health issues.
On October 3, 1994, the iconic rock band announced they would suspend the final dates of their “Hell Freezes Over Tour” following Frey’s diagnosis of a serious illness. This tour marked the Eagles’ first performance since the release of their 1980 album, The Long Run, after a nearly 15-year break fraught with internal conflict. The reunion was partly sparked by their appearance in the music video for Travis Tritt’s cover of “Take It Easy,” leading to a cherished comeback lineup that included Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Don Felder, and Timothy B. Schmit.
Health Concerns Prompt Tour Cancellations
According to reports from the Oklahoma City Oklahoman, Frey was facing a “chronic gastrointestinal disorder,” which was later identified as a recurrence of diverticulitis. This health setback necessitated the rescheduling of the band’s remaining tour dates to a later year. Frey openly discussed his health struggles, attributing them to past substance abuse. He had previously faced surgery in 1990 for intestinal issues and missed a crucial reunion with Henley in 1986 due to similar ailments.
Legacy and Future for the Eagles
In 2015, Frey underwent another surgery, which postponed the band’s acceptance of the Kennedy Center Honors. Tragically, he passed away in January 2016 at the age of 67 due to complications arising from several health conditions. Initially, his death seemed to signal the end of the Eagles; however, on July 15, 2017, the band returned with a new lineup including Frey’s son, Deacon, and Vince Gill, debuting their collaboration at Classic West in Los Angeles.
Following years of touring, the Eagles announced their farewell, dubbed The Long Goodbye Tour, in June 2023. They are also performing a multi-year residency at Sphere in Las Vegas as they approach the conclusion of their storied career, leaving fans eager to learn about their final performance.
