Robert Irwin’s “Powerful” Tango Earns High Marks From ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Judges

Fan favorite and early frontrunner Robert Irwin took to the dance floor with his partner, Whitney Carson, for a tango that wowed the crowd and judges. The dance was choreographed to “Move Your Feet” by Junior Senior as part of this week’s theme, One-Hit Wonders.

Robert took the dance floor with confidence, despite being told by his partner that they had a target on their backs after last week’s incredible dance. Any pressure he may have been feeling wasn’t visible as he powered through every move.

Judge Bruno Tonioli described the performance as “powerful, clean, clear.” He had some mild criticism for Robert, feeling as if parts of the dance were lacking. “You’re a great dancer, you don’t need gimmicks. You’re good!”

Carrie Ann Inaba agreed and praised Irwin’s commitment to the dance.

“Your charisma is off the charts. It’s the way you commit to every movement that touches us,” she said.

The judges’ scores from this week, combined with this week’s scores, moved Robert and Whitney to the top of the leaderboard! See their “powerful” tango in the video below:

The dance came one week after Irwin, 21, made his dancing debut with a “wild” jive that had him tied for first after the premiere.

“That was the best first dance I have ever seen on this show,” judge Derek Hough declared. Bruno Tonioli agreed, saying, “That wasn’t good, Robert. It was great!”

Robert, an Australian wildlife conservationist, was only 11 years old when his sister, Bindi, won Dancing With The Stars alongside professional dancer Derek Hough. Following in his sister’s footsteps is fulfilling his childhood dream, he said in an interview prior to the premiere.

If his first two dances are any indication, Robert Irwin could be taking a second mirrorball trophy Down Under. But he has many more weeks of competition to survive in the meantime.

No contestants were eliminated during the first round of competition last week. But the teams were on edge Tuesday night (September 23), knowing that the first two celebrities would be sent packing with a double elimination. The judges’ scores combined with public votes would determine which celebrities’ Dancing With The Stars journey was coming to an end.
