Family Of Buck Owens Announces The Closure Of Legendary Crystal Palace
Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield to Close After 28 Years
Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace, a legendary music venue in Bakersfield, California, will soon close its doors. Founded in 1996 by country music icon Buck Owens, the venue has been a staple for country music fans and artists on the West Coast.
End of an Era for Bakersfield’s Music Scene
On Monday, August 11, the Owens family confirmed the closure. The announcement follows the July 2024 news that the property was for sale.
In a statement, the family explained the decision was due to a challenging business climate and a desire to step back from management duties.
“We are proud of the legacy of the Crystal Palace—28 years of the best local and national entertainment, great food, and thousands of special occasions,” they shared. “Since Buck’s passing in 2006, we’ve tried to maintain the excellence he expected, even as food and labor costs increased.”
They added, “A combination of this business climate and the wishes of the Owens family members to step back from management requires finding new owners to use this beautiful venue. We know Buck would want us to thank the people of Bakersfield and fans from around the world for their support over the past 28 years.”
Final Events and Closure Timeline
A final closure date has not been announced. However, the venue’s official website currently lists September 25 as the last scheduled event.
About Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace has been more than just a concert venue. Over the years, it has served as a nightclub, bar, restaurant, and museum showcasing memorabilia from Buck Owens’ career. Its Old West-inspired design created a unique atmosphere for guests.
According to Owens’ website, building the Crystal Palace was a lifelong dream. He wanted a place where country music artists could perform and connect with fans. The venue went on to win awards like the CMA and ACM Nightclub of the Year.
Owens and his band, the Buckaroos, performed regularly at the Crystal Palace, making it a cornerstone of the Bakersfield sound.
At this time, it’s unclear what new owners plan to do with the property once the sale is complete.
