Watch The Great Toby Keith Perform “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” At His Final Concert In Las Vegas

Hard to believe it’s been an entire year without the Big Dog Daddy.

Country music icon, American patriot, father, husband… the great Toby Keith passed away one year ago today on February 5th, 2024, leaving behind a music legacy that most can only dream about. You be hard pressed to find anyone making country music right now that wouldn’t consider Toby an inspiration.

The Oklahoma native burst on to the country music scene in 1993 with breakout single “Shoulda Been A Cowboy,” which went on to become the most played country song of the ’90s. During his illustrious career, he released nearly 20 studio albums, had 20 #1 singles, and won dozens of awards including multiple ACM Entertainer of the Year awards. He went on 18 USO Tours in his lifetime and performed for more than 250,000 active duty service members.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

In June of 2022, Toby had been diagnosed with stomach cancer, saying:

“I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax.”

Toby performed a few times in 2023 including a powerful performance of “Don’t’ Let The Old Man In” At the People’s Choice Country Awards. He also made a surprise appearance at a Jason Aldean show in Oklahoma where he told the crowd he was gearing up to “get back to work.”

He played a 3-night run of shows in Las Vegas at the end of 2023 where he told the crowd he was doing much better:

“I’ve walked some dark hallways. The Almighty’s riding shotgun. But I feel pretty good. You have good days and bad days, but it’s a little bit of a rollercoaster. But I’m doing a lot better than I was this time last year. I’ve always wrote with a prayer, and as long as I have Him with me, I’m cool. You just have to dig in, you don’t have a choice.”

He then joked with a fan:

You think I’m dying don’t you, you b*tch? Me and the Almighty’s got this.”

Unfortunately, his cancer took a turn for the worse, and that night was his final show. December 14th, 2023, the Big Dog took the stage to perform a number of his country hits including the great “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” and more, for one last time.
