Toby Keith’s Wife Accepts His Country Music Hall Of Fame Medallion During Induction Ceremony

Toby Keith was officially inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday (October 20), and his wife, Tricia Covel, was there to accept the honor on his behalf.

Toby Keith died on February 5, 2024, just one day before he would have learned that he was going to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The fact made his inclusion in the Class of 2024 bittersweet, according to his daughter, Krystal.

In an interview ahead of Sunday’s medallion ceremony, Krystal told The Oklahoman that Toby knew that voting was underway and that he was likely to be chosen as one of this year’s honorees, but he died before learning that he was going to be inducted.

“It’s really bittersweet. It’s one of those things that I wish he was here to accept and to be aware of,” Krystal told the outlet.

But that didn’t take away from the magnitude of the honor, and it helps his family to know that he had already been chosen to join the hallowed hall before his death.

“It makes a huge difference to us that the voting concluded, and it was already set before he passed away,” Krystal said. “That makes a huge difference to our family and the way that we look at it.”

The 2024 inductees were announced in March, but the official induction ceremony took place Sunday, October 20.

Toby Keith was installed as this year’s Modern Era Artist nominee, alongside John Anderson who was named Veterans Era Artist inductee, and guitarist James Burton in the Recording and/or Touring Musician category.

Tricia Covel, Toby Keith’s wife of nearly 40 years, and his son Stelen attended the ceremony on Toby’s behalf. They accepted his Country Music Hall of Fame medallion from Alabama frontman Randy Owen and witnessed the unveiling of his plaque, which will hang in the CMHOF.

Each inductee was honored with performances from their fellow artists. Blake Shelton and Eric Church sang some of Toby Keith’s biggest hits, such as “Don’t Let The Old Man In,” “Red Solo Cup,” and “I Love This Bar.” Post Malone took the stage to perform “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight.”

Krystal Keith shared a poignant post following the ceremony where she expressed how proud she is of her dad.

“He made it. My dad fought every obstacle that landed in front of him by leaning on God and faithfully steering his own ship through the industry politics and nay-sayers. He climbed his mountain and now he rests at the top of all the peaks he ever really dreamed of. Collecting crowns that they said he would never wear,” Krystal captioned a photo of her and her daughter in front of some of Toby’s memorabilia at the Hall of Fame. “He didn’t need them to believe, because he did and so did we. I love you dad. I wish you were here to celebrate it with us. We all know you would’ve thrown a hell of a party for this one”
