Miranda Lambert’s name carries an unexpected backstory that dates back to a spontaneous decision made by her father, as she revealed in a recent interview ahead of her album release.
The country music star shared this intriguing anecdote while promoting her new album, *Crisco*, set to drop on Friday, October 2. Lambert’s revelation not only highlights her family history but also offers insight into her upbringing, which has significantly influenced her songwriting.
Unexpected Origins of a Name
During her conversation with *The Tennessean*, Lambert disclosed a fascinating detail about her birth certificate. “It’s literally crossed out on my birth certificate, and he changed it to Miranda, at the last minute,” she explained. This last-minute name change has led her to speculate that her father, Rick, possibly drew inspiration from “Miranda Rights,” the legal phrase that refers to the rights law enforcement must communicate to individuals before interrogation.
While Rick was a police officer in the past, he has never confirmed whether this theory is accurate. Lambert’s mother, Bev, also subscribes to this notion. “I literally think that I’m named after Miranda Rights. So does my mom,” Lambert stated.
Family Influences on Songwriting
Growing up in a household where both parents served as private investigators in small-town Texas, Lambert was exposed to compelling narratives that later informed her music. Her parents often provided shelter for battered women and children, experiences that resonated deeply with her and inspired her songwriting.
This life experience culminated in her hit song “Gunpowder & Lead,” through which Lambert bravely addressed the issue of domestic abuse. She acknowledged the risk of sending such a poignant message to country radio, saying, “Like, that wasn’t that popular to be singing about shooting an abusive husband on the radio.” Yet, she was determined to give a voice to the stories of those affected by abuse. “I wrote a song about it, and I wanted it to be heard. It needed to be said,” she added.
Lambert’s new disco-country album *Crisco* arrives Friday, October 2.
