Willie Nelson Reveals The Two Songs Of His That Still Bring Him To Tears
No matter how much time passes, Willie Nelson says there are some songs that will always tug at his heart.
During a recent interview with GQ, the 92-year-old was asked if there are any songs that make his eyes “misty.”
After more than seventy years in the music industry, you’d think it would take a lot to move him. It turns out, though, that there are still a couple of tracks that hit Willie as hard today as they did the very first time he heard them.
The Songs That Mean The Most To Willie Nelson
Those special songs are his classics “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground,” and “Always on My Mind.”
Willie first released “Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground” in 1980 for the soundtrack of Honeysuckle Rose. The ballad explores love and loss, which explains why it still makes Willie emotional all these years later.
As for “Always on My Mind,” the song isn’t originally Willie’s, but it has become one of the most famous in his catalog.
It was written in the early 1970s by Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James. “Always on My Mind” was first recorded by soul singer Gwen McCrae. Not long after, country-pop star Brenda Lee also released her version.
It went on to be covered by many other big named artists, including Elvis Presley. However, when Willie shared his rendition, it became a number one hit. He ended up winning three Grammys for the tune, and it is still one of his most well known songs to date.
When it comes to other artist’s music, Willie says there is still “a lot” out there that he feels deeply about.
He shared that songs like “Stardust” and “Moonlight in Vermont” come to mind. He also said that anything released by Hank Williams and Bob Wills will always be special to him.
“There’s a whole lot of good music out there,” Willie said. “I still think music is what brings us all together. Politics separates everybody. Music brings us back together.”
It’s that mindset that has kept the Country Music Hall of Famer dedicated to his career all these years. With over 150 albums under his belt, the 92-year-old is still getting up on stage and performing for arenas full of fans.
