Thomas Rhett Grieves the Loss of Kona, His Second Family Dog to Pass Away in Just Six Weeks
Thomas Rhett and his family are experiencing another heartbreaking loss. For the second time in just six weeks, they’re mourning the passing of a beloved family pet as their sweet Kona has died.
The country star took to Instagram to share a tribute to Kona, a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, who passed away just weeks after their dog, Cash.

“It’s been a tough dog month for our family. We lost our little Kona girl. I think after cash passed she just wanted to go be with him. It’s weird losing a dog, cause whether you know it or not they are just always there, always by your side at the dinner table. They are truly a part of your family,” he wrote.
He went on to share that he listened to HARDY’s song “Dog Years” and broke down in tears, saying the track hits especially hard for anyone who’s loved and lost a dog.

“Got the courage last night to listen to HARDY song ‘Dog years’ I cried like a child, but dang that song is so spot on about the life of a dog if they could talk. Kona and Cash yall will be missed a lot. I know y’all are having a blast up in heaven together,” he shared.
Rhett introduced Kona to fans in 2013 via YouTube and explained the meaning behind his name.
“We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We drank Kona coffee every day, like Kona is one of the islands in Hawaii… I was looking up Hawaiian dog names, and one of the names was Kona,” he revealed.
On October 16, Rhett shared a tribute to Cash alongside a gallery of photos of the sweet pup.
“Today our sweet little Cash man went to go be with Jesus. He was the most loyal, kind dog that I have ever known,” he wrote.

According to Rhett, Cash wasn’t just a pet, he was Lauren’s “best friend” and a comforting, protective companion each time they welcomed a new daughter home. Even with his goofy, troublesome moments, the pain of losing him has been overwhelming.
“He would stay up so many late nights with her while she was sick and I was gone. I never in a million years thought that a dog I got so frustrated with for eating food or tearing up things in the house would make me this sad,” he continued.
After losing both Kona and Cash, Thomas Rhett’s friends and fans rallied around him on Instagram, filling the comments with love and condolences.
