THE VOICE: 4-Chair Turn Kayleigh Clark Makes Shocking Coach Pick After “Incredible” Sugarland Cover
The second week of Blind Auditions on The Voice brought more surprises, including one from country singer Kayleigh Clark.
Kayleigh Clark, a 20-year-old Mississippi native, earned a rare 4-chair turn on Monday night (September 29) with her flawless Blind Audition performance. Clark chose to sing Sugarland’s Grammy Award-winning song, “Stay.”
All four of the coaches were enamoured with Kayleigh’s voice and hoped she would choose to join their team.
“Absolutely incredible. I love your song choice. You sang it beautifully. You did a wonderful job, and I’m very proud of you,” Reba told her.
Coach Niall Horan agreed and compared Kayleigh’s voice to another country star who got her start on a reality singing competition. “You have a really unique voice, kind of like a Carrie Underwood voice that really pierced through.”
While it seemed apparent that Kayleigh would choose to join Team Reba due to her country roots, she surprised everyone by choosing Niall as her coach.
“When Kayleigh chose Niall, I was shocked. Nobody is staying with their genres. They’re coming after the country artists because country artists do very well on The Voice. Very smart,” Reba said.
Kayleigh Clark’s surprising move marks the second time this season a country artist who earned a four-chair chose Niall over Reba.
During the first week of Blind Auditions, country trio Dek of Hearts turned every chair with a cover of JoDee Messina’s “Heads Carolina, Tails California.”
“I love with all my heart 3-part harmony. It touches the core of my being. I can’t tell you how important this is for y’all to be on my team. Y’all are gonna make it to the finals,” Reba said as she fought hard for the trio.
But despite Reba’s pleas, Dek of Hearts shocked the coaches by choosing to join Team Niall. “We’re a country trio, but we’re a pop-country trio,” they explained.
Niall was clearly stunned, as was Reba, who lay down on the floor and “cried” that she had lost out on the group.
“There is a chance I could become a country coach. Who would have thought? It’s happening,” Niall said after securing his second country artist of the season on Monday night. “Kayleigh is just one of those undeniable voices. It’s so clean, It’s so pure. I stole a country music artist off the queen of country music. I do not know how it happened, but I am so glad she’s on Team Niall.”
