Bunnie promised fans the song release on the new album that Jelly Roll dropped on October 11th, called Beautifully Broken.
The song was not on the original album, which caused fans to speculate as to why. Shortly after the original album was released, their speculation was put to rest. Jelly Roll surprised everyone by releasing the Beautifully Broken Deluxe Digital Album, which contained the song as one of its key tracks.
The song tells the heartbreaking story of a sexual assault victim trying to get “Past Yesterday.” Jelly Roll is joined on the moving track by Skylar Grey, who sings in the first person perspective as Jelly Roll is the song’s narrator.
The song opens with the chorus:
“Don’t judge me if I get too high tonight
My journey isn’t yours, it’s only mine
The damage has been done, so this, I pray
God, give me the strength to get myself past yesterday”
Sung beautifully by Skyler, the chorus is a cry to heal and has struck a deep chord in those who have experienced sexual abuse.
The song continues as Jelly Roll’s raspy voice tells the story.
“Her mom and daddy trusted
That neighbor she grew up with
They were working days and nights
So he took her home from school sometimes
One day, when she came home
It looked like she saw a ghost
She snuck up to her room to cry
With a lifelong scar to hide”
The story of innocence stolen is heartbreaking; it has moved many to take to social media and share their stories of abuse and healing.
