The live 2015 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical will be on YouTube for a limited time
For the past two months, the YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On! has been sharing free streams of whole Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals every week, including The Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. That series ended last week with Cats, and many musical-theater fans have wondered what, if anything, would come next. Now we have an answer: NBC’s smash-hit 2013 live broadcast of The Sound of Music, starring Carrie Underwood as Maria von Trapp, will stream for two days starting on Friday, May 22.
You know the story: Wayward nun teaches music, stern dad melts, Nazis rise, sixteen goes on seventeen. Along the way, this 1959 musical, which differs somewhat from the Julie Andrews film, delivers such beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein standards as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi” and “Climb Every Mountain.” In addition to Underwood, the principal cast of the NBC broadcast includes Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp and—stealing the show quite entirely—Broadway ringers Audra McDonald as the Mother Abbess, Christian Borle as Max and Laura Benanti as the Baroness.
Links to charitable organizations are provided by the Shows Must Go On! The Andrew Lloyd Webber streams raised more than $600,000 for worthy causes.
You can watch The Sound of Music Live! here on Friday, May 22, starting at 2pm EST (7pm BST, 5am AEDT). It will remain viewable for 48 hours.
