Morgan Wallen Promises His Son He’ll Always Be His Hero—The Emotional Story Behind ‘Superman’ You Need to Hear
Morgan Wallen recently opened up about the emotional experience of writing “Superman,” a song he penned as an emotional letter to his 4-year-old son, Indigo “Indie” Wilder Wallen. During a recent appearance on This Past Weekend With Theo Von, the 31-year-old country superstar revealed that the unreleased track moved him to tears the first time he listened back to it.
Morgan Wallen Admits “Superman,” The Song He Wrote His Son, Makes Him Emotional
“The song I wrote to my son is the song that does that…it’ll be out soon,” Wallen shared when Von asked him if there was a song on his new album, I’m The Problem, that gets him in his feels. “It’s also one of those things to where I’ve tried so many times to write a song like that for him, and it always fell flat. So I’d listen to it on the way home or whatever after we wrote it, and I’d be like, it’s good, you know, but it’s not how I want it.”
The East Tennessee native admitted that writing a song for his son was challenging, as he struggled to find the right words and sound for the track. He didn’t want it to be a typical father-son sentimental ballad about watching him grow up, but instead he wanted to record a song that was unique and authentic to his sound.
“I also didn’t want to write a song to him that was all, I don’t know, sappy and slow and just like what you would expect a dad’s son song to be, ‘oh, I wish you wouldn’t grow up and all that.’ I didn’t want it to be that. I didn’t want that song at all. That song’s been written plenty enough, and I wanted it to have a little bit of my sound and my swag, and to be honest,” Wallen explained to the 45-year-old podcast host and comedian, Theo Von.
The Song Brought Him To Tears
“Superman” was actually the last song that made it onto Wallen’s fourth studio album. He revealed that the idea came from his friend, Blake Pendergrass, but the original hook was different. While working on the track, Wallen said he made a change that completely transformed the song. Wallen continued, “It was actually Blake, one of my buddy. It was his idea and the hook was different though. I don’t remember what the hook was exactly, but I was just singing it, and I was like, ‘oh, I know what it is.’ And I changed the hook, and it made, it was like, ‘oh, there it is’ and all three of us, four of us in the room just kind of was like, oh yeah, that’s it.”
The moment that made Wallen realize that he had finally written the perfect song for Indigo was on his drive home from a recording session when he was listening to the song, and it brought him to tears. “And then on the way home I was listening to it and started crying, and that’s the first time that had happened with a song for him. So that I kind of knew,” Wallen concluded.
Previously Teased The Song On Social Media
Morgan Wallen has yet to release “Superman,” however, back in February of 2025, he teased the song by sharing a snippet of it on social media. In the teaser clip, he reflects on his struggles with personal flaws and mistakes he’s made, acknowledging his imperfections as a father while expressing hope that his son won’t think less of him as he grows up. He admits that despite his efforts, he’s not always able to save the day, but he’ll always try his best, even though, like Superman, he’s still just a man at times.
“One day you’re gonna see my mugshot/ from a night when I got a little too drunk/ hear a song about a girl that I lost/ from the times when I just wouldn’t grow up/ and when you ain’t a kid no more/ I hope you don’t think less of me/ I try to hide my fallen short/ but you’re gonna see/ now and then that bottles my kryptonite/ brings a man of steel down to his knees / don’t always know my wrongs and rights/ sometime I’m my own worst enemy/ No, I don’t know always save the day/ but you know for you, I’ll always try/ I do the best I can/ but Superman’s still just a man sometimes/ oh sometimes,” Wallen sings in the near minute-long teaser clip.

Second Song Inspired By His Son, Indigo
This isn’t the first time Wallen’s son inspired a song. Indie actually inspired a track on his record-breaking third album, One Thing At A Time, titled “Dying Man.” Though “Dying Man” may sound like it’s about a woman saving a man, Wallen reveals it was his son, Indigo (Indie) Wilder, born in 2020, who transformed his perspective and gave him the drive to be a better man.
“‘Dying Man’ is a song that speaks on – I wasn’t always sure, I guess none of us were, you know? Maybe I thought that I might die sooner than later and then once my son came into the world, I felt like I had a whole new reason to live and stick around,” Wallen previously told Music Mayhem. “This song is talking about a woman, but for me, it’s more to my son than it is to a woman… he was born, and he gave me something different to live for. So this song is dedicated to him.”
