Katy Perry Bid Farewell to ‘American Idol’ in an Emotional Departure

During Sunday night’s Season 22 finale on May 19th, Katy Perry bid a tearful farewell to American Idol. Season 22 proved to be emotional for various reasons, not just because a new Idol champion was crowned, but also because it marked the end of an era for longtime judge Katy Perry.

Perry announced her departure from the reality singing competition during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in February. She explained that she was leaving in order to turn her attention to her music career and release new music.

“I love the show so much, but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music,” Perry said. “It’s going to be a very, very exciting year for all pop star girlies,” she continued. “Let’s just say I’m creating space for my new wingspan.”

Katy Perry has sat in the judge’s seat between Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan for seven seasons. During that time, the “Roar” singer became known as an honest and sympathetic judge, often using quirky analogies when addressing contestants.

When Katy made her way to her seat during Sunday night’s finale episode, she was clearly already emotional about the significant moment. The most significant moment of the night for Perry was when she took the stage to sing for the last time as a judge. She teamed up with finalist Jack Blocker to sing her song “What Makes A Woman,” donning a ball gown covered with images of this season’s cast.

She was later honored by the women of this season’s Top 10 who sang a medley of her own hits as she ate pizza and danced along from her position at the judge’s table.

While there was plenty of attention focused on Katy Perry, it didn’t overshadow the fact that a new American Idol winner was going to be crowned.

Abi Carter, Will Mosely, and Jack Blocker were the last three standing. Each took turns performing Bon Jovi hits in honor of the night’s mentor, Jon Bon Jovi. After Jack Blocker was eliminated, the final two sang once again, this time to debut a new original song. Abi Carter sang “This Isn’t Over” and Will Mosely performed “Good Book Bad.” Ultimately Abi Carter was crowned the Season 22 American Idol champion.
