Last month, Luke Combs released his fifth studio album, Fathers & Sons.

There’s no doubt this is the most sentimental album of Combs’ career, as he navigates his way through fatherhood and shares those experiences through music, creating a connection with listeners who can relate to him.

Combs opened up about his shift to more sentimental themes in his work during an interview with Taste of Country Nights. He talked about how becoming a father and husband has completely changed his perspective, influencing how he approaches songwriting and the stories he wants to tell through his music.

“Obviously, that’s kind of where my headspace is. It’s just kind of hard to write or focus on anything else other than that. That’s what my world is right now,” Combs said. “I’m lucky to get to spend three or four days a week at home with the kids. We play two nights a week, so the rest of the days I’m home with them. That’s what I’m doing. I go out and play some shows and come home and make breakfast and lunches and naps and diapers.”

Luke Combs’ Emotional New Song “In Case I Ain’t Around”

Combs’ song “In Case I Ain’t Around,” is the second track on his latest album. The song is about a father who wants to make sure he shares important life lessons and advice to his son, in case he isn’t there to do it himself one day. As Combs sings, he hopes that when he’s no longer around, his son will be able to live fully and carry on without him.

“Make sure y’all still eat together at your Mama’s after church Sunday / Throw the dog a ball, take a walk and call your brother if you had a hard day / Where the dogwoods bloom, you best be fishin’ / When it’s my time to die, boy, don’t stop livin’”

“In case I ain’t around when you get older / I just thought I’d tell you now so down the road you / Are good to go through the highs and lows / In all life’s up and downs / Yeah, that way I’m still there for you somehow / In case I ain’t around”

The emotional track has really resonated with fans, who are sharing their personal stories of love, loss, and appreciation for their parents, as well as their experiences as parents themselves, in the comments.

“Lost both my parents by the age of 33. Just had my second child. I miss my parents so much but I know they’re always with me. Luke, this song means everything to me. Thank you,” one commenter wrote.

“First time I heard this song and listened to the lyrics, I wrote it down in a journal for my daughter. Things hit a little different when you have have stage IV cancer. She will know Luke’s music kept me going,” another shared.
