Grand Ole Opry Reveals Lineup For Dolly Parton’s 80th Birthday Celebration

Dolly Parton’s Parents Were Too Poor To Pay The Doctor When She Was Born

Country music icon Dolly Parton‘s 80th birthday is fast-approaching on January 19.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee. She was one of 12 children born to her parents, Avie Lee and Robert Lee Parton.

Since Dolly’s parents were poor, they didn’t have any money to pay the doctor, Robert F. Thomas, for her delivery. So they paid him with a sack of cornmeal.

Today, there’s a little white chapel in Dolly’s Dollywood theme park named after Dr. Thomas. The chapel holds weekly church services on Sunday mornings. It also hosts special services at 3 PM on Sundays during the Christmas season.

Dolly Parton also celebrates her Opry anniversary in January. She became a member on January 4, 1969.

So naturally, the Grand Ole Opry has plans in place to honor Dolly’s 80th birthday and her 57 years of Opry membership.

On Wednesday (January 7), the Opry revealed an exciting lineup of artists who’ll perform during their “Birthday Weekend Celebration” show for Dolly on January 17, which appropriately, will be themed around her “iconic ’80s era.

The lineup includes Lainey Wilson, Vince Gill, Trannie Anderson, Rhonda Vincent, and more artists to be announced.

The show will be held at the Opry House in Nashville. Tickets can be purchased on the Opry’s official website.

“Grab your tickets to Opry Goes Dolly and get ready to throw it back to when the hair was bigger, the clothes were brighter, and ‘9 to 5’ hit the silver screen!” the Opry shared.

The Opry also included a video message from Dolly in their post. She thanked everyone for celebrating her “big old birthday” and singing her songs on the Opry stage.

Dolly won’t be able to attend the show, but the Opry still plans to honor “her through song and fun all day long.”

Writing in the comments of their post, the Opry said attendees can expect:

  • Birthday party cupcakes when you take an Opry House daytime tour.
  • A larger-than-life birthday card for fans to sign.”
  • Photo opps with a Dolly impersonator on the Opry plaza.”
  • Specialty Dolly-themed drinks.”
  • Dolly Parton tributes throughout the Opry show.
