George Strait Beams As Taylor Swift Sings His Hit Song, “Run”

15 years ago some of country music’s biggest stars gathered to celebrate The King of Country, George Strait, at the ACM Artist of the Decade concert.

Held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the star-studded event honoring George Strait featured performances from Blake Shelton, Lee Ann Womack, Alan Jackson, Faith Hill, Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, and many more.

George, his wife Norma, son Bubba, and daughter-in-law Tamara watched from the side stage as each performer took their turn singing a song in George’s honor. Most artists chose to sing a song from Strait’s extensive catalog. Others, like Faith Hill and Martina McBride, chose to sing other classic tunes, such as Loretta Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough” and Garth Brooks’ “The Dance,” respectively.

One of the night’s highlights was a performance from then-19-year-old Taylor Swift who was one of the genre’s biggest stars, and hadn’t yet crossed over into pop. Taylor took the stage and shared a story about a conversation she had with King George while she was the opening act on his 2007 tour.

She recalled going out on her first tour at the age of 16, saying:

“I’d never been on a big stage before or sung in an arena, so I asked him if he had any advice about performing in the round,” Taylor shared of her conversation with George. “Yes, I do,” he replied.

“I sensed I needed to ask a follow-up question,” Taylor joked. “So I said, ‘How do you do that?’”

Strait responded, “Just do it for about 25 years and it’ll feel real natural.”

Taylor Swift then sang her “‘absolute favorite” George Strait song, his 2001 hit “Run.”

With millions of cumulative views on all social media platforms, Taylor Swift’s cover of “Run” is considered to be one of the best renditions to date.

“Run” was written by Anthony Smith and Tony Lane and was released as the lead single from George Strait’s 2001 album, The Road Less Traveled. The song never hit No. 1 for Strait, but came close three times.

In December 2001, it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, but was beat by Toby Keith’s “I Wanna Talk About Me” for the top spot. It climbed to No. 2 again a month later but was surpassed by “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” by Alan Jackson. A few weeks later, the song once again hit No. 2, but was kept out of the top spot by Steve Holy’s “Good Morning Beautiful.”
