To accompany their new duet, Johnson and Underwood recalled their first impressions of each other. Johnson referred to Underwood as one of his “heroes.”

“You know we’re around the same age, but I always grew up listening to your music going, ‘I wonder what it would be like to be in that position?’” Johnson said. “And they say they don’t meet your heroes because you might get disappointed. And I was not disappointed. It’s really a breath of fresh air to meet someone that fame hasn’t affected and that is really staying grounded.”

Listen To “I’m Gonna Love You” Now

Johnson and Underwood’s “I’m Gonna Love You” is a mesmerizing country love song. Johnson said that he knew immediately upon hearing the song that he wanted Underwood to sing it with him.

“It was a non-negotiable for me; either we sing it together, or I wouldn’t sing it at all. It’s that special to me,” Cody said in a statement posted to his website. “Working with Carrie has been an absolute pleasure. She’s not only one hell of a singer, but she’s a class act all the way around. It warms my heart to work with someone who’s seen so much success in their career and they’re still so down to earth. I feel like this duet is going to be massive in so many ways, and I couldn’t be prouder of it!”

Johnson’s instinct about having Underwood join him for “I’m Gonna Love You” was spot-on. Not only do their voices complement each other perfectly, but they both know how to deliver a love song, making this collaboration one of the best in recent years.

The track serves as the lead single of Johnson’s newly announced Leather: Deluxe Edition album. The album will contain 13 new songs, including “I’m Gonna Love You.”

“I’m Gonna Love You” tells the story of an undying love that will stand the test of time. Johnson and Underwood each take turns singing a few lyrics before their voices unite in the romantic chorus. It goes:

“So good that it almost hurts. Steady and true as a Bible verse. My heart skips just thinkin’ of you. The warmth in bed, baby, we can’t lose. Earth’s gonna shake every now and then. Some runaway roads are gonna dead end. And on those days when the world feels cruel, I’m gonna love you…”

The duo plans to debut the song’s official music video on CMT later on Friday (September 27). Until then, enjoy their new duet, “I’m Gonna Love You,” in the audio clip below.
