As most of ya’ll probably know, Randy Travis‘ singing career came to a halt after a horrible stroke in 2013.
Three years later, he was able to regain parts of voice, and even recently got back into the vocal both for Josh Turner’s cover album, but unfortunately, he won’t ever return to the singer he was in the ’80s and ’90s when he was cranking out hits like “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “Deeper Than the Holler,” and “Three Wooden Crosses.”
At the CMAs back in 2016, a ton of Travis’ good friends came together on stage and performed a medley of songs as a tribute to the country icon, while also introducing him as the newest member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Dwight Yoakam kicked off the medley with his hit song, “Guitars, Cadillacs” and we can see Charlie Daniels, Charley Pride and Reba on stage as well. The performance then transitioned to Clint Black singing “Killin’ Time,” followed by bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs singing “Country Boy.” Alan Jackson was up next, rocking the stage with “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” and the whole place started going crazy. Hell, you even see Tyler Hubbard from FGL singing along in the crowd like he knows a thing or two about real country music.
Then, in the grand finale. Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood sing “Forever and Ever, Amen,” and the whole stage comes together to join in for the chorus. Right before the conclusion of the song, Mr. Travis himself caps it off with the final “amen.”
What a powerful moment. You can see the emotion from everybody in the room, and even Randy Travis gets a little choked up as Carrie Underwood announced that he’s the newest member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Here I go again, sweating from my eyes.
