About the Song
This song tells of how a newly born daughter helps the narrator to take more notice of the things God has created. “I Saw God Today” entered the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart at No. 19, the highest debut in Strait’s career.
Songwriter Rodney Clawson said that the idea for the song came from Criswell, who said that after unsuccessful hunting trips, he would often say that he “caught a glimpse of God today” despite not seeing any animals.

George Strait told AOL about this song:
“‘I Saw God Today’ is such a well-written song… It means a lot. Sometimes we take a lot of things for granted, especially anybody that’s had a child. When they first see that child – if they’re in the delivery room or not – it truly is a miracle. And you just realize that all of these things that God has given us, sometimes you just take for granted. But if you just step back and take a look around, you’ll see what beauty we have around us in the things that He has created for us.”
Moreover, the hit was the first song with “God” in its title to top the Hot Country Songs chart since Sawyer Brown’s “Thank God for You” in 1993. In this song Strait mentions a room 508. Coincidentally this song ascended to No. 1 in the first week of May 2008, or the first week in 5/08.
Furthermore, “I Saw God Today” was named the single of the year at the 2008 CMA Awards. Strait’s Troubadour won the award for best album at the same ceremony. Producer Tony Brown commented to Billboard magazine backstage:
”A lot of people try to reinvent themselves and push the envelope and the envelope breaks. With George, we don’t try to overthink it.”
