Country Music Fans Sound Off After Beyonce Beats Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney For “Top Female Country Artist” At 2024 Billboard Music Awards

Beyoncé is officially a country music award winner.

The R&B/Pop star made waves when she released her country album that explicitly “wasn’t a country album” back in March of this year. Cowboy Carter was praised by some and dismissed by others. Beyoncé’s dip into the genre of country music was quick, exploding to the top of the charts, but it quickly fell off a cliff after that… dropping out off The Billboard Top 200. This week, it re-entered at #195. For comparison, Morgan Wallen’s One Thing At A Time came out in March of LAST YEAR and is still sitting at #15 right now.

Many assumed that would translate into nominations and wins for Cowboy Carter during the awards show season, but that hasn’t exactly been the case. Beyoncé wasn’t even granted a single nomination at the Country Music Awards back in November. Some CMA voters even came out and said that she wasn’t a nominee in any of the categories because Beyoncé herself said Cowboy Carter wasn’t a country album.

Though the “My Rose” singer wasn’t included in the CMA’s, Beyoncé did receive nominations at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards. And when it came time to give an artist the title of “Top Female Country Artist,” Beyoncé beat out country music superstars Lainey Wilson and Megan Moroney for the award:

That award is the first award that Beyoncé has won in the country music category. She might be able to add her country awards collection at the upcoming Grammys, where she’s racked up 11 different nominations including “Best Country Album” and “Best Country Song.”

Gaining the title of “Top Female Country Artist” is a pretty big deal for someone that just decided to drop into the country genre temporarily (at least it seems). You could look at it as a positive and say its cool that some of music’s biggest stars are wanting to try out country music – and they’re being rewarded for doing so. Or, you could looks at it as an affront to the actual country artists who have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the genre.

A number of folks took to social media to sound off after Beyoncé took home the Billboard Music Award:

I’ll tell you another person who probably wasn’t too happy with Beyoncé taking home this award… Oliver Anthony. To be frank, he probably doesn’t care about awards shows anyways. If he did though, you’d have to think the Virginia artist would be against Beyoncé being crowned as the “Top Female Country Artist” considering he had this to say about her latest album:
“It was complete trash. It makes me just want to throw up, trying to listen the beginning of her version of ‘Jolene.’ Just total cringe.

It represents how degenerative our society has become that a song like a Beyonce version of ‘Jolene’ can come out and anybody actually listen to it and think it not’s complete f***ing trash.”
