Ashley McBryde reveals her years-long silence with her father.

Ashley McBryde has opened up about the tumultuous relationship with her father in a revealing conversation on the Human School Podcast, where she expressed the emotional turmoil that led her to sever ties for years.

In the October 6 episode, the acclaimed country artist reflected on her complex history with her father, William McBryde, detailing how his strict, angry demeanor and infidelity contributed to her long-standing resentment. Their fractured relationship intensified following her parents’ divorce when McBryde was just 17, leaving a lasting impact on her life.

Understanding the Strain

Throughout her career, McBryde, 43, has described her father as a farmer and preacher whose strictness often bordered on tyrannical. In earlier interviews, she revealed the anger she harbored toward him, saying, “I was mad at that man for most of my life.” The divorce only compounded her feelings: “When he left my mother and left us, I was even more… I didn’t even speak to him for years.”

McBryde has poignantly remarked that anger felt like the “easiest thing to feel” in her struggle to reconcile her emotions. However, she ultimately realized that she had the power to redefine their relationship on her own terms. “You can stay angry at him, or you can find a way to still have a dad,” she stated, highlighting her transformative journey.

Forgiveness and Reflection

In a profound shift, McBryde decided to seek understanding rather than remain consumed by anger. She explored her father’s past to uncover the reasons behind his actions, stating, “I’m not going to excuse a lifetime of tyranny… But his dad wasn’t very nice, and neither was his.” This introspective approach led her to reflect on the concept of multi-generational trauma, a theme she encapsulated in her song “Hand Me Downs,” featured on her latest album, Wild, released in May.

Through this new perspective, McBryde is not only redefining her relationship with her father but also encouraging fans to consider the deeper complexities behind familial strains and the potential for healing.
