As the influence of Taylor Sheridan’s Western dramas continues to expand, the Yellowstone effect is now inspiring a rise in rugged baby names across the U.S.
Baby-name experts have noted a significant uptick in Western-themed names, correlating with the popularity of country music and shows like Yellowstone and Landman. This cultural shift marks a growing fascination with cowboy life, making names reminiscent of those favored by the Dutton family increasingly appealing to new parents.
What Baby Names Is ‘Yellowstone’ Inspiring?
According to Rebekah Wahlberg, a specialist in baby-name trends at BabyCenter, the current surge in country music and Western television has sparked a renewed interest in names that evoke the spirit of the West. Names such as “Dutton” have gained traction, alongside a variety of others that are becoming more popular.
This trend is more popular for boys, but there are a handful of Western-themed girl names in the top 100 too. On the boys’ side, we have Colton, Walker, Jeremiah, Silas, Micah, Weston, Ezekiel, Josiah, Wyatt and Maverick. For girls, there’s Sadie, Lucy, Delilah, Abigail and Oakley.
While some of these names carry biblical significance, others are steeped in ranching culture. This suggests that the trend encompasses more than mere adoration for the cowboy lifestyle.
Additional names gaining popularity include Cheyenne, Pearl, and River for girls, and Cody, Denver, and Jackson for boys. Country music’s influence is also notable, with names like Cash and Conway appearing on birth certificates, while Winona and Houston have climbed BabyCenter’s rankings.
Is the ‘Yellowstone’ Effect Changing More Than Baby Names?
While not every parent naming their child Wyatt or Sadie is directly inspired by Sheridan’s shows, the growing interest in Western culture is evident. The market for ranch properties has also seen significant shifts, with prices soaring over the past decade.
According to Realtor.com’s Luxury Housing Report, the median price for ranches has surged by 112% in ten years, substantially outpacing the 66% increase for typical homes in the same time frame. Whether it involves selecting a Western-inspired name or aspiring to own a piece of land in the countryside, the Yellowstone effect clearly extends beyond the television screen.
