8 Unlikely Country Music Marriages and the Wild Love Stories Behind Them

Carrie Underwood Country

One country music star hired the woman he’d hoped to marry for a music video. Another legend married a man who was married to the woman her husband was having an affair with. Yeah, we were confused too, but it all worked out.

Then, there’s the country stud who boldly predicted he’d marry a woman nearly two decades older than him. That’s not that remarkable, until you learn that the little guy was only 11 years old at the time.
Spoiler alert: He nailed it!
An argument could be made that any time two people fall in love it’s unlikely and remarkable. In a world of eight billion people, what are the odds, right? That said, there are unions that seem far more predictable than the eight you’ll find below. Take Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, for example: They met on tour and started to spend time together on the road. So, it totally makes sense they’d fall in love and marry.

Miranda Lambert and husband Brendan McLoughlin, on the other hand? Well, we’ll start there.

8 Unlikely Country Music Marriages + the Wild Love Stories Behind Them
These marriages are so crazy they’re worth their own country song!

From the little boy who called his shot, to the cop who stole the superstar’s heart, here are eight of country music’s most unlikely marriages. If there’s a lesson to learn, it’s that no dream is too big.

Miranda Lambert and Brendan McLoughlin

Married Since: January 26, 2019
First Met: November 2018
What’s remarkable?: She was performing on GMA and he was a security guard keeping fans in their proper place. He was also days away from becoming a father, and she wasn’t long removed from a high-profile affair.
It all moved very quickly, but the reason they make this list is because the stories of hot cop and country superstar are rare.

Shania Twain and Frederic Thiébaud

Married Since: Jan. 1, 2011
First Met: 1990s
What’s remarkable?: Thiébaud was once married to Marie-Anne — the woman Twain’s first husband, Mutt Lange, allegedly had an affair with. This led to the end of the Twain/Lange marriage and the Thiébaud marriage.
All parties had known each other for nearly two decades, but Twain and her current husband didn’t begin dating until 2009, 12 to 18 months after their respective marriages dissolved. They were there to support one another, and it turned into something much bigger.

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher

Married Since: July 10, 2010
First Met: 2008
What’s remarkable?: Underwood and Fisher don’t match up on paper. She is a singer and reality TV star from Oklahoma, and a vegetarian. He’s a meat-eating hockey player from Canada who loves hunting deer when he’s not hunting goals.
Opposites attract, however, and Underwood was pretty smitten from the start. They dated long distance for nearly two years before getting engaged and eventually married in 2010. They have two sons now.

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani

Married Since: July 3, 2021
First Met: April 2014
What’s remarkable?: Both were married to other people when they met on the set of The Voice, but the end of those marriages gave them something in common. They bonded and became close. Then, they became really close, and before you knew it, the rumors are true!
Like Underwood and Fisher, the pair seem to be polar opposites on paper. She was a California rocker who was very comfortable in L.A. He was a farming Oklahoman and always would be. Nine years later, they’re still making it work.

Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley

Married Since: March 2003
First Met: 2001
What’s remarkable?: Brad Paisley was about 19 years old when he “fell” for Kimberly Williams. She was the star of a movie called Father of the Bride, and the young singer-to-be couldn’t get her out of his mind for over a decade.
Flash forward to 2001 and Paisley needed someone to star alongside him in his music video for “I’m Gonna Kiss Her.” He asked Williams, and she said yes. About a year later he asked her to marry him, and once again, she said yes.

Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo

Married Since: Aug. 31, 2016
First Met: 2015
What’s remarkable?: Jelly Roll’s wife Bunnie worked in the sex industry in Las Vegas prior to their marriage. In fact, the first time they met, he was at a club to watch her perform. The singer was also working on finding a new way to earn a living, being not far from prison and a life of drugs on the streets. “I felt her soul,” the country rocker confesses to Taste of Country Nights host Evan Paul. “When I hugged her, I could just feel the genuine-ness of her. I could tell it wasn’t an act.”

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman

Married Since: June 25, 2006
First Met: January 15, 2005
What’s remarkable?: The surprising part about this marriage is that even though both singer and actor are from the same part of the world — and both were huge celebrities in 2005 — they hadn’t met each other. Not until both were taking part of G’Day USA in Los Angeles did they cross paths. She was immediately hooked.
Urban took a bit of time to call. Actually, he kept Kidman’s number for four months, later admitting he was in a bad place in his life and not in a mindset for a relationship.

Marty Stuart and Connie Smith

Married Since: 1997
First Met: 1970
What’s remarkable?: Marty Stuart was 11 years old when his mom took him to see his favorite singer, Connie Smith. Smith was 17 years older than he was, but he wore a bright yellow T-shirt so she’d notice him and even nabbed a post-show pic with her.
Driving home, the future legend told his mom he was going to marry Smith and that’s what happened, 27 years later. Talk about calling your shot!
