Country music superstar and Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood is giving her hometown school district an early Christmas present.
To celebrate the release of her holiday album “My Gift,” Underwood recently donated $100,000 worth of Chromebooks and other supplies to the students in her hometown school system, Checotah Public Schools, to help during the pandemic.
As previously reported, the newly crowned Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year talked about making the donation through her C.A.T.S. Foundation (Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation) during a Friday interview on NBC’s “Today” show. Underwood’s publicist confirmed the donation and amount in an email.
“This year has been tough on so many levels, and we definitely want to encourage people to reach out and give their gifts, pass their gifts forward,” Underwood said on the “Today” show.
“Schools need Chromebooks because they just don’t know what’s going to happen with the pandemic, and we were more than happy through my C.A.T.S. Foundation to help out.”
As previously reported, the Checotah native has made multiple donations to her hometown public schools over the years through her C.A.T.S. Foundation. In January 2012, the district confirmed she had donated $350,000 through the foundation over the previous holiday season, with the funds going to wish-list items ranging from Apple computers to band instruments.
In fall 2011, the 2005 “American Idol” winner returned to her hometown to help 200 volunteers assemble a custom-designed playground at Checotah’s Marshall Elementary School, and in summer 2009, Underwood gave $117,000 in musical instruments to Checotah schools through her foundation.
In addition to her recent donation, Underwood has set up a website for fans to share their own stories about acts of kindness as well as examples of how we can all inspire others by paying it forward. For more information, go to umgn.us/SeasonOfGiving.
As previously reported, Underwood’s first full-length yuletide collection, “My Gift,” was released on digital and CD on Friday and is due out on red vinyl on Oct. 30. The streaming service HBO Max will air during the Christmas season an exclusive holiday special for the platform starring the seven-time Grammy Award winner.
